Institute Disciplinary Council
The Institute Disciplinary Council at IIBMT Chennai shall undertake measures to raise awareness and prevent any untoward
incidents within the campus premises. It is the responsibility of the Council to ensure compliance with the provisions
of education regulations and maintain discipline among students, including oversight of the Disciplinary Squad's
activities to curb indisciplinary behavior.
I. OBJECTIVES
The guidelines of the Institute Disciplinary Council encompass the following broad areas:
1. Ethics and Code of Conduct
Education aims to foster intellectual, professional, personal, and ethical development. It thrives in an environment of
reasoned discourse, intellectual honesty, openness, and respect for all individuals. Self-discipline is integral to
achieving these goals. Students are expected to uphold these principles at the Institute, encompassing:
• Respect for oneself
• Respect for others
• Respect for Institute property
• Respect for Institute authority
• Honesty, integrity, professionalism
• Academic integrity and demeanor
Code of Conduct:
• Students are expected to adhere to these guidelines.
• Students should conduct themselves orderly in academic and recreational activities, both on and off-campus during
training, excursions, sports, and project work.
• Students must respect the rights and privacy of all Institute members.
• Students pursuing professional qualifications must adhere to professional conduct suitable for their future roles.

Creating a safe, engaging, challenging, and appreciative campus environment is essential for achieving these goals. This
ethos demands integrity and compassion to foster a culture of learning, appreciation, and understanding among all
members of the Institute community, including students, faculty, and support staff.
The faculty, administrators, staff, and students of the Institute share the responsibility of safeguarding the
Institute's intellectual, social, emotional, psychological, and other resources.
Upon admission to the Institute, students agree to abide by the Institute's norms, including ethics, code of conduct,
rules, regulations, and guidelines notified periodically. As members of the Institute, students are expected to uphold
its values and maintain high standards of conduct.
2. Definition of Indiscipline or Misconduct
"Misconduct" under these disciplinary procedures broadly refers to unauthorized interference with the proper functioning
or activities of the Institute, or actions damaging the Institute's reputation. Specific acts of indiscipline or
misconduct include but are not limited to:
Violating guidelines or rules of the Institute.
- Physical assault or threat of physical force against any faculty, staff, or student within the Institute.
- Unauthorized absence from classes, tests, examinations, or other academic activities.
- Possession, use, or threat to use weapons.
- Misbehavior or cruelty towards any member of the Institute.
- Use of drugs or intoxicants not prescribed by a qualified doctor.
- Violation of Civil Rights Protection Act, 1976.
- Encouraging violence or conduct involving moral turpitude.
- Gambling or any form of discrimination.
- Discrimination based on caste, creed, language, origin, social, or cultural background.
- Practices of casteism or untouchability.
- Verbal or other derogatory acts against women.
- Smoking, use of narcotics, possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages, or gambling.
- Attempts at bribery or corruption.
- Willful destruction of Institute property.
- Disorderly conduct on Institute premises or inciting others to do so.
- Creating discord based on sectarian or communal grounds.
- Disrupting academic functions of the Institute.
- Engaging in disruptive activities during tests, examinations, or other Institute activities.
- Violating guidelines or rules of the Institute.
3. Administrative Mechanism for Handling Student Indiscipline Cases
The Institute Disciplinary Council is constituted by the Chairman of the Institute. It comprises five to seven members,
including the Council Chairman, appointed for a two-year term, with the possibility of reappointment or re-nomination.
Vacancies are filled at the discretion of the Chairman.
4. Disciplinary Action
The severity of disciplinary measures is based on the recommendation of the relevant committee. A list of indicative
penalties is attached as Annexure I, subject to periodic revision.
5. Appeal/Review of Outcome of Disciplinary Action
Students may appeal decisions of suspension, rustication, expulsion, or penalties imposed by the Institute on the
recommendation of the Disciplinary Committee. Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Vice-Chancellor within a
specified timeframe, not exceeding thirty days from the date of imposition. The Vice-Chancellor may refer appeals to the
Disciplinary Committee for review or appoint an independent committee to consider the matter.
6. Cases Involving Criminal Allegations
Criminal offenses within the Institute's jurisdiction are handled in accordance with applicable laws, as advised by the
Institute's legal counsel. Cases involving criminal allegations are reported to the police by the Institute's legal
representative, and affected students are duly informed.
7. Maintaining Case Files of Disciplinary Action
Records of all disciplinary proceedings and summaries from each academic year are maintained by the Dean of Students
Welfare. Cases related to examination discipline are referred to the Examination Discipline Committee or Unfair Means
Committee.
These guidelines supersede any conflicting provisions and align with regulations for the maintenance of discipline among
students, as notified by the education department from time to time
